| The Hotel
Milleluci is located just 5 minutes drive from
the historical center of Aosta.
Roman
Aosta.
The
City of Aosta was founded by the Romans in 25 BC,
and was initially named Augusta Praetoria, in honor
of the emperor Augustus, following the Roman victory
over the Salassi, the previous inhabitants of the
valley. Aosta’s rectangular perimeter is protected
by defensive walls, with access through four gateways.
Heading down from the Hotel Milleluci towards the
town, the first monument you will come across is the
Augustan Arch, constructed in 25 BC to commemorate
the victory of the Roman troops, and now considered
the city’s signature monument. Proceeding towards
via Sant’Anselmo, you may take time to appreciate
some of the following: the collegiate church of Sant’Orso;
the small, deconsecrated church of San Lorenzo; the
Porta Praetoria; the Tour Fromage; the Roman Theater
and Amphitheater; the Torre del Lebbroso; Bramafan
Castle.
The Sant’Orso Fair.
As has been customary for over a thousand years, during
the Sant’Orso Fair on the 30th and 31st of January,
the streets of Aosta’s historical center are
taken over by countless artists and artisans from
all over the Aosta Valley, who gather here to exhibit
their locally-crafted wood carvings, wrought ironwork
and earthenware. This event now attracts millions
of visitors from all over Italy, France and Switzerland,
and Aosta is literally invaded by tourists for the
duration of the fair. On the night of the 30th, the
streets of the center are illuminated and a vigil
or Veillà is held, to the sound of
traditional folk music. Better still, an array of
local dishes is laid on for everyone to enjoy. It
all adds up to an unmissable night!
Ski resorts.
The ski season in the Aosta Valley lasts from November
to April, and there is excellent glacier skiing to
be had during the summer. With mile after mile of
pistes, extending so far that they actually link up
with pistes in Switzerland and France, the Aosta Valley
gives you the freedom to practise downhill, cross-country,
Alpine, and telemark skiing, as well as snowboarding
and carving. Whatever you decide, wherever you turn,
you will enveloped by incomparably beautiful scenery.
